From recent reports, it seems two changes are on the horizon:
- The 3.5mm headphone jack may soon be a thing of the past by moving to Lightning connectors.
- A General move to wireless or bluetooth headphones.
Firstly, it makes sense that Apple would move from a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack to a Lightning connector for its earphones, as it would allow Apple to reclaim the handset space it currently needs to reserve for the jack, and reclaim it for other purposes such as a larger battery (please!). We've seen that space saving is a current trend for Apple with their new 12-inch Retina MacBook featuring just one USB-C port, ridding the HDMI, thunderbolt, USB 3.0 and SD card ports found on the MacBook Pro. Question is, would this impact the dome8 design? In short, No. The consequence of this for dome8 design would be trivial as the lightning connector would tuck under the dome just as easily as the Jack does now. Therefore the dome8 design is future-proofed against changes Apple may choose to make to the physical headphone connector.
Secondly, any move to wireless/bluetooth earphones would almost certainly require a cable connecting the earpods with a short cable (around the back of the neck) to exchange signals between earpods, and provide user security from losing one of your earpods(!). Would this impact the dome8 design? No. The dome8 design can easily accomodate the connecting cables in exactly the same manner. Therefore the dome8 design is future-proofed against changes Apple may choose to make in order to make the move to wireless earphones.
